A basement flood can ruin a furnace and water heater in one night. A working sump pump, with a backup, is cheap protection.
Heavy summer storms have flooded basements across Detroit and nearby suburbs, and a basement flood can ruin a furnace, a boiler and a water heater in one night. A working sump pump keeps groundwater out of the basement. We install, replace and repair sump pumps, including battery backup pumps that keep running during a power outage. Many pits in older basements hold a pump that has never been tested.
Common problems include a stuck float switch, a burned-out motor, a check valve that lets water flow back into the pit, and a discharge line that is frozen or blocked. Discharge lines should send water away from the foundation, not into the sanitary sewer. We test the pump, the float and the alarm, and we check that the pit and lid are in good shape.
Storms often knock out power exactly when a sump pump is needed most. A battery or water-powered backup pump adds protection. We also look at the heating equipment nearby. Raising a furnace or water heater on a platform, or moving controls higher, can limit damage if water does come in. You get the price for the pump and any changes before work begins.
Sump pumps in Detroit: common questions
How do I know if my sump pump is working?
Pour a bucket of water into the pit. The pump should start, empty the pit and shut off. If it does not, or runs constantly, call us.
Do I need a backup sump pump?
If your basement has flooded before or has equipment in it, a battery backup is worth considering. Power often goes out during the storms that cause flooding.
Can a flooded furnace be saved?
Sometimes, but water damages the controls, gas valve and motor. Do not run a furnace that has been underwater until it has been inspected.
