Heat Pumps and Mini-Splits in Michigan Winters

Do heat pumps work in a Detroit winter? Cold-climate and dual-fuel systems, running cost, installed prices, mini-split zones and snow.

Heat pumps work in Michigan winters, and newer cold-climate models keep heating well below freezing. In Detroit, many homes pair a heat pump with a gas furnace as backup. Ductless mini-splits are a strong choice for older homes with no ducts.

Price ranges on this page are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Your house, the equipment you choose, the venting and the ductwork move the real number up or down. Last checked October 2026.

Is a heat pump worth it in Michigan winters?

A heat pump is worth it in Michigan for many homes, especially when it is paired with a gas furnace or when the house has no ducts and needs cooling anyway. You get air conditioning in summer and efficient heat in spring, fall and milder winter days.

It is less clear-cut as the only heat in an older, drafty house, because output drops in the coldest weather. Gas and electric rates also matter. We look at the house and your bills before recommending one.

Do heat pumps work below zero?

Cold-climate heat pumps keep heating below zero, but they put out less heat as it gets colder and lean on backup heat in the deepest cold. Standard heat pumps lose more ground. HomeGuide publishes no separate price for cold-climate models, so we price them after a visit.

Detroit gets below-zero nights in most winters, though not many of them. Backup heat, from a furnace or electric strips, covers those nights.

Is a heat pump cheaper to run than a gas furnace?

Whether a heat pump is cheaper to run than a gas furnace depends on your gas and electric rates and the outdoor temperature. In mild weather a heat pump often costs less to run. In deep cold, natural gas usually wins. That is why dual-fuel systems are popular here.

A heat pump will raise your electric bill, because it moves heat with electricity, while your gas bill falls. Compare the two together.

Should I keep my gas furnace as a backup? What is dual fuel?

Yes, for most Detroit homes keeping the gas furnace as backup makes sense. That is a dual-fuel or hybrid system: a heat pump and a gas furnace share the ducts, and the thermostat switches to the furnace when it gets too cold for the heat pump to keep up.

If your furnace is fairly new, a heat pump can often be added in place of the AC, using the furnace as the backup. HomeGuide publishes no price for dual-fuel systems.

Can a heat pump completely replace my gas furnace?

A cold-climate heat pump can completely replace a gas furnace in a well-insulated home, usually with electric backup heat for the coldest nights. In an older, leaky Detroit house, it often needs insulation and air sealing first, or a larger system, to stay comfortable in January.

How much does a heat pump cost to install?

An air-source heat pump costs $10,000 to $25,000 or more installed, by HomeGuide's heat pump page. Its AC page lists $8,000 to $15,000 and its HVAC system page $3,800 to $8,200, so the figures disagree. The heat pump page is the one for heat pump questions.

House sizeTypical sizeNational installed range
1,000 sq ft1.5 to 2 tons$6,000 to $8,500+
1,500 sq ft2.5 tons$8,000 to $10,500+
2,000 sq ft3 tons$10,000 to $20,000+
2,500 sq ft3.5 to 4 tons$12,000 to $22,000+
3,000 sq ft4 to 5 tons$18,000 to $25,000+

An electrical panel upgrade, listed at $1,800 to $2,500, is a common extra in older Detroit homes. DTE Energy and Consumers Energy both have heat pump rebates for qualifying equipment, and we are a participating contractor with both.

How much does a mini-split cost installed?

A mini-split costs $2,500 to $15,000 or more installed, by HomeGuide's mini-split page, depending on how many indoor units it has. A single-zone wall unit is $2,500 to $5,000.

How much does a 3 zone mini-split cost?

A 3 zone mini-split costs $6,500 to $11,000 installed, by the national figures.

ZonesNational installed range
1 zone$2,500 to $6,000
2 zones$4,500 to $8,000
3 zones$6,500 to $11,000
5 zones$10,000 to $15,000
8 zones$18,000 to $20,000+

Can a mini-split heat a whole house or just one room?

A mini-split can heat a whole house with several indoor units, but each unit only serves the room it is in. Closed-off rooms without a unit stay cooler. In older Detroit homes with radiators, owners often keep the boiler for winter and use mini-splits for cooling and shoulder-season heat.

For an attic bedroom, an addition or a sunroom, one zone is often the simplest fix.

How do I keep a heat pump from freezing up in a snowstorm?

A heat pump defrosts itself, so some frost and steam in winter are normal. To keep it from freezing up, keep it on a stand above the snow line, keep snow and ice clear of the top and sides, and make sure the defrost water can drain away and not refreeze under it.

Never chip ice off the coil. If the unit stays coated in thick ice for hours, or ice drips onto it from a roof edge, call us.
